What is an IUD?
IUD stands for intrauterine device. Other names for this type of contraception include IUC (intrauterine contraception) and LARC (long acting reversible contraception). These devices are either copper or progesterone containing and are active for a range of 3 to 10 years depending on device.
Who are IUDs recommended for?
As per the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada, intrauterine contraception should be offered as a first-line method of contraception to both women who have or have not had pregnancies in the past. As of June 2018, the Canadian Pediatric Society also endorses long acting reversible contraception (intrauterine contraception) as the first-line option for contraception for Canadian youth.
