Dr. Chantal McLuckie
Where did you go to medical school?
I attended medical school at he University of Witwatersrand (WITS), Johannesburg, South Africa. After graduating in 2006 I did a 2 year rotating internship through Groote Schuur hospital and a year of high risk obstetrics and emergency medicine. In 2011 we moved to Canada where I initially worked as a family physician in Lethbridge. We have called Calgary home since 2012.
What lead to you becoming a family Physician?
I love the diversity of family medicine – to be able to help the very young, the very old and everyone in between; from simple presentations to more challenging complex cases. I enjoy the integration of different subspecialties of medicine and the relationship that I can build with an individual or a whole family.
How do you define patient care?
Patient care for me is the integration of caring for someone as an individual as well as a member of the community. It includes assessing their background, goals, abilities , expectations and motivation and then applying it to promote health on both a physical and mental level. I aim to provide a setting where a patient can be comfortable, encouraged and guided to achieve their best health possible.
What do you love about your job?
I enjoy the chance to work with people and to be a part of their journey thorough life. I have the opportunity to provide advise and guidance to improve health by preventing, screening and treating diseases. I feel that I have the opportunity to make a difference on a daily basis.
Outside of the office, what are your interests/hobbies?
I love spending time with my family and friends and being outdoors (especially during the summer). We love biking and running along the Bow river to downtown Calgary. I doubt I will ever be a winter sport enthusiasts but you may occasionally find me on a slope attempting to ski. On my off days we are usually on adventures around this wonderful city with our 2 young boys.
